Diving for Treasure

A 60th birthday cake for a company director who loves going scuba diving. Little bit of humour as the treasure chest is "ye olde DEFRA treasure chest" as he works for a government quango! Had a lot of fun making the underwater elements and actually got to see some of these for real while snorkelling in Mexico a couple of weeks later.

Posh Wedding Cake

My best yet! a 'proper' wedding cake made for my brother-in-law and his new wife. Married in Mexico they wanted a traditional cake for their wedding reception at home with tropical flowers and chillies. The construction of the flowers seemed to take forever and were a feature of my dining room for about 3 months! I think it was worth all the effort.

Close up of a 'girly' cake made for friends birthday, all covered with lilac sugarpaste orchids. aah sweet!

A close up of the final arrangement for the wired sugar flower course.
I think I really should invest in a decent camera before I go any further or add any more cakes to this blog.
The pieces below are the culmination of a years part time class in wired sugar flowers. They include, clockwise from the left; a spring arrangement of miniature daffodils made using a pulled flower technique (no cutters); calla (or arum) lilies suprisingly easy to make but very delicate; a Xmas arrangement with a poinsettia flower, ivy, holly leaves and holly berries; a posy of blackberries, acorns, blackberry flowers, oak and bramble leaves; and last but not least a crescent shaped bouquet including freesias, roses, carnations, various leaves and cymbium orchids. All good fun, I'm going back again next year for the advanced class!
Another Gibson Flying 'V', I'm getting the hang of guitars now, proportions are still difficult without spending on a huge background board.

The Fist of Rock!

Unashamedly copied from the Ace of Cakes. Red velvet sponge cake covered in fondant, the fist is moulded in marzipan.

Something Different

This was made for my daughters engagement party. I used chocolate moulds for some of the shapes and painted the shapes and the piping with gold afterwards. This is a technique I would really like to explore and improve on as I love all things rococco and a bit over the top.
For a fashion loving friend with a penchant for designer handbags.

Time for Tea!

Four birthdays on the same day, bit of a challenge. I though it might be easy, as I have a reputation for making cup cakes to make themed tea cup cakes for each person. Below are the basic shapes prior to decorating.

Cheesecake!

This cake was created for two colleaugues in work sharing the same birthday. The bottom layer is made from a gluten free cake recipe and the top three layers are real cheese, grapes and leaves in flower paste.

Apologies for a very blurred picture. This one was for a fitieth birthday to a lady who was selling up,buying a narrow boat and escaping the rat race. This was a tough challenge, getting the shape right, and painting the traditional motifs in such a small scale.

Our Chalet Park

We have a weekend chalet in West Wales and in October lots of the residents have birthdays. Each of the pots is dedicated to the birthday boys and girls.

A Pub Till

I was asked to make a sixtieth birthday cake for a local landlord, the theme? his favourite thing. It didn't take long to think of this - money!!!!
I struggled to get the 'cash' made from icing sheets, something to do with it being illegal to reproduce fake money. I compromised and photocopied the cash on to paper, no one was fooled!

More cakes!

A 65th birthday suprise for a friend who was retiring, guess what he did for a living?
This wasn't too difficult to make as it was quite an easy shape.
